The Costin Institute for Medical Educators is an academic program specifically designed for medical personnel currently involved in teaching, academic management as well as those aspiring to a career in medical academe. The program is a year-long educational experience which offers training in critical areas such as leadership, teaching and learning styles and emotional intelligence. It consists of four weekend sessions (Thursday through Saturday) with 18 contact hours per session with pre- and post-session assignments. The goal is to train physicians to become more effective teachers and administrators.

The Costin Institute was established at P站视频 in 2003 through endowed contribution from the and named in honor of J. Richard Costin, D.O., one of the osteopathic profession's leading surgeons and teachers of general surgery. Dr. Costin was a 1949 graduate of P站视频's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and served as chairman of the board of CCOM. He participated in the transition of a single college into a full university with five colleges. Dr. Costin passed away on August 9, 2014.

Program Description

The Costin Institute is a yearlong program directed at helping physician-educators and medical educators become more effective teachers and/or administrators and most importantly, leaders. The topics covered during the Costin program include teaching/learning styles, multiple self -awareness tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Emotional Intelligence, leadership, budget and finance, professional commitment, communication skills, technology that supports teaching, evidence based medicine, and research and scholarly pursuits.

Applications are being accepted for Cohort 20. Details regarding schedule, etc. are being finalized and will be announced soon.

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation

Participants are required to attend all four sessions of the program. Tuition for the program is $6000.

AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, D.O. (Costin Cohort 5) highlighted several Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs) for their excellence in diversity in the October 2023 edition of . Josh Cox, D.O., Executive Dean of KCU College of Osteopathic Medicine and Vice Provost for Medical Affairs (Costin Cohort 12) was quoted in the recent article, A six-year partnership between the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine and HCA Midwest Health expands the number of clerkships for third and fourth-year medical students and gives HCA access to academic research and classroom resources. "For our medical students to train alongside HCA Midwest Health鈥檚 highly-skilled physicians is invaluable to their growth and development as future physicians,鈥 Dr. Cox said.

Rita Getz, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (Costin Cohort 6), was recognized in an along with her students earlier this year: "Dr. Rita Getz and osteopathic medical students Paul Delgado, Sarah J. "We are extremely proud to have our medical school receive a seven-year accreditation from the COCA, which is the maximum amount for a new school," said John Graneto, D.O., Dean of CHSU-COM said in a .

CCOM's Teresa Hubka, D.O., (Costin Cohort 4) begins tenure as president of the American Osteopathic Association: Teresa Hubka, D.O., Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of P站视频, has begun her term as president of the American Osteopathic Association. "I was deeply honored, and I'm certainly looking forward to this leadership role," Dr. Hubka said.

: We applaud the appointment of AACOM nominee Millicent King Channell, D.O., M.A., FAAO, FNAOME (Costin Cohort 5), and AACOM Board of Deans member Brian Kessler, D.O., FACOFP, to serve on the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The NCFMEA evaluates accreditation standards applied to foreign medical schools and determines how they compare to U.S. medical school standards.

Nicole Wadsworth, D.O., Dean of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (Costin OH Satellite Cohort), published the following article in May 2024:   Dr. Wadsworth was also recently recognized: Nicole Wadsworth, D.O., Dean of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, is included in the Long Island Business News' list of 33 influential figures in health care.

The South Georgia Campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine gives new medical students an introduction to medical school and the campus in the two-week, pre-matriculation Fundamental Integration Required for Excellence program. "During FIRE they get an idea of what's expected from them and what to look forward to.
